Final Announcement
ISEC 2007
23-26 September 2007
(at Waseda University)

Invitation to ISEC2007
Although environmental problems and energy problems, including global warming, are very serious issues, no effective plans have yet been proposed. In the alleviation of these problems Stirling engines and Stirling cycle machines will play important roles.

The International Stirling Engine Conference, ISEC, that began in Great Britain in 1982 has grown and flourished over the years. Japan successfully hosted the 4th ISEC in 1988, the 7th ISEC in 1995, and this year hosts ISEC2007, the 13th ISEC. At this third conference in Tokyo, Japan, more than eighty technical papers concerning the Stirling engine and Stirling cycle machines will be presented, and about 200 participants are expected to be involved in active discussions on technological development.

The conference also includes two special lectures relating to environmental problems and energy problems, and a panel discussion concerning the practical use of Stirling engines is scheduled. Equipment and poster exhibitions will introduce the latest technologies. In addition, speed contests will be held using model cars equipped with Stirling engines. At the same time, some Stirling engine manned cars will be demonstrated. These events may be especially interesting for young researchers and engineers, and students, who carry our hopes for the future.

Prof. Ivo Kolin of Zagreb University, Croatia, passed away on March 10. His work provided great achievements in Stirling engine research. A memorial session for Prof. Kolin is scheduled at ISEC2007. We sincerely await your participation in ISEC2007 in Tokyo.

Special Lectures
Two special lectures will be given by two invited speakers.

Special Lecture I
Date & Time: Monday, 24 September 2007, 14:00 - 15:00
Theme: Status of Electric Power Industry and Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells in Japan
Speaker: Dr. Takao Watanabe, Energy Engineering Research Laboratory, Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI)
Abstract: Worldwide energy and environmental issues require Japanese electric power companies to provide very efficient power generation systems in order to reduce Green House Gas emission. Molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) power generation systems have many features, such as high efficiency, low pollutant emission and fuel/capacity flexibility. The net efficiency can reach 70% (HHV base) with a natural gas and oxygen utilizing system. The Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI) has been developing such MCFC systems.

Special Lecture II
Date & Time: Tuesday, 25 September 2007, 13:00 - 14:00
Theme: The Fuel Cell World -- Matsushita's vision for fuel cell cogeneration --
Speaker: Mr. Yuji Hato, Fuel Cell Development Project, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.
Abstract: Fuel cells have become the center of attention as a new energy source which helps prevent global warming. The presentation explains "Household Fuel Cell Cogeneration System," of which Matsushita Group is now pouring all the efforts into the development. Since February 2005, our system has been in the market by Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. as a compact-sized device of the 1kW class. The systems, which by maintaining a balance between both electric and thermal energy, show energy savings of primary energy of 15-30%, and can reduce CO2 emissions by 30-40%.

Panel Discussion
At this panel discussion, Stirling issues and the future will be discussed. The title is "ECO (Ecology) Now with Stirling Technologies." It will be held on 26 September 2007. About fifteen international researchers and specialists who are developing the Stirling engine and its applications will join the panel discussion. From them, five panelists have been selected, and each presentation is about 5 minutes. Others are commentators during the panel discussion.

The panelists:
Prof. H. Carlsen (Technical University of Denmark, Denmark)
Prof. K. Hamaguchi (Meisei University, Japan)
Mr. N. Lane (Sunpower, Inc., USA)
Prof. V. Naso (Universita di Roma 'La Sapienza', Italy)
Mr. M. White (Infinia Corporation, USA)

Technical Excursion
A technical excursion to Shin-Marunouchi Building and the Marunouchi redevelopment area has been organized.

"SHIN-MARUNOUCHI" building & "MARUNOUCHI"redevelopment area
Date: Wednesday, 26 September 2007, 13:30-17:30
Sponsors: Mitsubishi Jiso Sekkei Inc. and Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI)

Marunouchi is situated between Tokyo Station and the Imperial Palace. The opening of the newly rebuilt Marunouchi Building in front of Tokyo Station in 2002 marked the first stage of the Marunouchi redevelopment project.

The Marunouchi redevelopment area covers five districts (Marunouchi 1-chome, Marunouchi 2-chome, Yurakucho, Otemachi, and Uchisaiwai-cho). The district lying before Tokyo Station is Marunouchi 1-chome. The technical excursion will take participants on an observational tour of Marunouchi 1-chome heating and cooling facilities.

After observing these facilities, participants will travel by bus over Rainbow Bridge, a suspension bridge with a panoramic view of Tokyo Bay. The excursion will then end in front of Akihabara Station. Information concerning the time and place to assemble for the excursion will be provided at the Registration Desk.

Introduction to Marunouchi 1-chome Heating & Cooling Facilities
(1) Heat Service Businesses in Marunouchi
Heat service businesses in Marunouchi are operated by Marunouchi Heat Supply Co., Ltd. This company opened its first heat service business in 1976 (in Otemachi) and currently maintains 14 heat service plants in five districts of Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward, a broad supply area of 103.4 ha reaching from Otemachi to Uchisaiwai-cho. The volume of heat energy it sells is the second largest in the nation. (From "Heat Service Business Handbook, Fiscal 2006")

(2) Marunouchi 1-chome Heating & Cooling Facility
In November 1984 the Marunouchi 1-chome Heating & Cooling Facility began supplying steam (only) to an area of about 12.2 ha, from its sub-plant in Marunouchi Center Building. Thereafter, it continued to provide only steam, but along with the redevelopment of Marunouchi 1-chome, it has begun to supply chilled water as well.

In June 2001, construction work began on both the Mitsubishi Shintaku Building Sub-plant (B4 Floor, Mitsubishi Shintaku Bank Building) and "Marunouchi 1-chome Center." The Mitsubishi Shintaku Building Sub-plant specializes in the supply of chilled water and steam for cooling and heating. From March 2003 it began providing chilled water to The Industry Club of Japan Building, as well as to Mitsubishi Shintaku Bank Building.

Subsequent to the redevelopment of the Marunouchi I-chome Block (currently, the Marunouchi OAZO Shopping Center), Marunouchi 1-chome Center-the main plant for the Marunouchi 1-chome district-has established facilities for providing chilled water and steam, and has tied up with two other existing plants in the supply of chilled water and steam, for enhanced stability of supply.

In April 2007, the Mitsubishi Shintaku Building Sub-plant added a turbo chiller and steam absorption chiller, and is now equipped to supply the Shin-Marunouchi Building, which was newly opened this past spring, and other newly constructed buildings.
